Wethersfield — NEWINGTON – The 18th annual Peter J. Lavery Memorial Ride will take place Sunday, Sept. 18, at Churchill Park, 1991 Main St. Visit http://www.peterlavery.org/memorial_run.htm for more information.

This ride is in memory of MPO Peter J. Lavery who was killed in the line of duty on Dec. 30, 2004, while responding to a domestic violence call. It is an event that honors the sacrifice he made, celebrates his life and love of motorcycling and keeps his memory alive.

MPO Lavery was an avid motorcycle rider throughout this adult life and was proud to be selected to serve on the Newington Police Department’s motorcycle unit.

Registration takes place from 8 to 9:45 a.m. with a $20 donation per bike requested. All law enforcement supporters on all makes of motorcycles are welcome. The ride departs at around 10 a.m. from Churchill Park and is escorted by many motor officers from throughout the state. The ride is held rain or shine.

The route takes the riders from Churchill Park, Newington, through Berlin, Rocky Hill, Cromwell, Middletown, Portland, Glastonbury and Wethersfield before returning to Churchill Park at about 11:30 a.m.

T-shirts will be sold in advance of the ride and limited supplies will be available at the ride. Connecticut Police Supply on Fenn Road in Newington is selling T-shirts.

KILLINGWORTH – Middlesex County Chamber of Commerce’s Killingworth Division is hosting a paper shredding event on Saturday, Sept. 17 from 9 a.m. to noon, at Killingworth Town Hall, 323 CT-81.

Ukraine: Then and Now will take place Tuesday, Sept. 20, from 6:30 to 7:45 p.m. Independent historian Damien Cregeau will explore 150 years of history between Ukraine and Russia.

WETHERSFIELD – Golfers of all skills are invited to register to play in the inaugural Denise D’Ascenzo Foundation Golf Tournament on Tuesday, Sept. 20, at Wethersfield Country Club at 76 Country Club Road. Advance registration is now open at www.TheDeniseFoundation.com/golf.

The benefit golf tournament event will raise funds for The Denise D’Ascenzo Foundation, a non-profit organization whose mission is to continue longtime Connecticut broadcaster Denise D’Ascenzo’s legacy of love and kindness by supporting advances in medicine and health, promoting responsibility in the media, and assisting those facing physical and mental challenges.

Registration begins at 10:30 a.m. and includes an 11 a.m. barbecue lunch. Tee-off is at noon for 18 holes of golf in a Scramble format, golf carts, and a clubhouse dinner banquet with an auction/awards banquet emceed by local personalities including WFSB-TV 3′s Kara Sundlun and Scot Haney, and WTNH-TV 8′s Dennis House who serves as President of the Foundation. All players receive a complimentary tournament gift, and can compete for a variety of on-course golf prizes. The full day of play and events is $300 per individual golfer, twosomes are $600, and foursomes are $1,200. A variety of sponsorship packages also are available now for businesses, organizations, and individuals.

HARTFORD – The 2022-23 season of Hartford Public Library’s ArtWalk will open next week with an exhibition of paintings created by Wethersfield artist Brigid Kennedy, focusing on issues of social justice during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Paintings explore the pandemic’s impact on issues such as immigration, education, mental health, race and class.

Originally a sculptor, Kennedy transitioned to painting for this exhibition, titled “Visual Narratives.” She utilized acrylic paint, oil paint and pen.

This exhibition marks the start of a season featuring a diverse group of artists who each examine unique themes through their work. ArtWalk at Hartford Public Library is open to visitors from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday. The gallery is located on the third floor of the Downtown Library at 500 Main St.

WETHERSFIELD – The CFFA’s first in-person meeting for 2022-23 will take place from from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Sept. 19 at the Pitkin Community Center, 30 Greenfield St. The meeting is open to the public. This month’s meeting will feature a program on fishing the Black and Walloomsac rivers in Vermont.

HADDAM – The Middlesex County Chamber of Commerce’s 126th annual Awards Dinner will take place on Wednesday, Sept. 21, at the Riverhouse at Goodspeed Station, 55 Bridge Road.

During the annual Awards Dinner, the Middlesex Chamber’s 2022 Distinguished Citizens will be honored. Each year, the Middlesex Chamber presents this award to one or more individuals who has served as an inspiration to others and is recognized by the Middlesex community as having unselfishly given his or her time and talent to produce a lasting benefit to the area. The 2022 Distinguished Citizens are: Stephen & Alison Brinkmann, Vincent Capece, Jr., and Richard Carella, Esq.
